Titanium dioxide is the most widely used white pigment because of its brightness and very high refractive index (n=2.4), in which it is surpassed only by a few other materials. TiO2 Rutile has among the highest refractive indices of any known mineral, and also exhibits high dispersion. Finely powdered rutile is a brilliant white pigment, and is used in paints, plastics, paper, foods, toothpastes and other applications that call for a bright white.
